Clytha Loop

A short loop around Clytha Park.

As part of the 2025 Monmouth Radar Weekend away, between the Team meeting and the pub kitchen closing time. So time was limited and this one was a quick hike, with Deb, John, Panos and Taff the dog...and not that many photos. If I ever did this walk again it would fit in the castle and other remains nearby.

Parking at The Clytha Arms this route is anticlockwise through grassy fields and woodland to the River Usk/Afon Wysg. The route then follows the river south before turning off and following the local roads back to the pub for some dinner.

The starting point at The Clytha Arms.

Heading west from the pub car park and following a drystone wall before crossing a few grassy fields north to a wooded area.

Then its a case of following the path west through the woods. At one point the path gets close to the A40 but then turns south.

Exiting the woods the route takes you around the edge of a field and passes by Rose Cottage as you cross the road towards the river.

Follow the route south through a narrow wooded area parallel to the river.

Turn east off the path to head towards Clytha National Trust Car Park, where the track then turns into road. At this point we started to head uphill through a field towards Clytha Castle but couldn't find the path through the drystone wall. Here is the view from that point, halfway up the hill.

We aborted the plan to head through the fields and headed back down the hill (as can be seen on the OS map route), turning right to head back to the road to the pub. Another right turn at the road junction by the grand entrance to Clytha Park.

Following the road east, this pic is looking back up the hill where we originally planned to walk through - maybe next time. Clytha Castle is hidden amongst the trees at the top of the hill.

The final 1/4 mile of the hike is along this road, it's fairly quiet, but keep an eye/ear out for farm traffic! This road then takes you back to The Clytha Arms for food n beer.
